About this tool
The CVC, CVCC and CCVCC Word Generator makes words for decoding practice. It can make real words or made-up alien words, which are always clearly marked as not real, so students practise blending sounds rather than guessing.
Best for: Foundation to Year 2
How to use it
Choose the word pattern: CVC, CVCC or CCVCC.
Choose real words, alien words, or both.
Generate a word and have students sound it out and blend it.
Ask students to tell you if it is a real word or an alien word.
Teaching tips
Alien words check whether students are really decoding, not remembering words.
Ask students to write the word on a whiteboard after reading it.
Match the pattern to the phonics you are teaching this week.
