About this tool

The Expanded Notation Tool shows what each digit in a number is really worth. Students drag a digit down out of the number and watch zeros appear one by one as it grows into its full value, building the expanded notation (e.g. 4000 + 300 + 50 + 2) piece by piece.

Best for: Years 2 to 5

How to use it

  1. Choose how many digits to work with, or press New number.
  2. Drag a digit down slowly to watch its zeros appear, or tap it to reveal its value instantly.
