Area Cover introduces area as the amount of surface a shape covers. Students cover a shape with informal units, with no gaps or overlaps, then count and record the area and compare two shapes to see which is bigger.
Best for: Years 1 to 2
How to play
Click to place units over the shape until it is completely covered.
Count the units row by row and record the total.
Repeat for the second shape.
Compare the two totals to decide which shape has the larger area.
Teaching tips
Talk about why there should be no gaps or overlaps when measuring area.
Before counting, ask students to estimate which shape is bigger.
Move on to Skip Count the Grid when students are ready for a faster counting strategy.
