About this game

Partitioning Numbers helps students see that every digit in a number has a place and a value. Students drag each digit out of a 2- to 5-digit number into its place value box. In Expanded Form mode, each digit grows into its full value as it lands (5 hundreds becomes 500), building the number sentence 500 + 30 + 5 = 535.

Best for: Years 1 to 4

How to play

1. Look at the number and find the digit in each place.
2. Drag each digit into its box — hundreds, tens or ones. On an interactive whiteboard you can also tap a digit, then tap a box.
3. Switch to Expanded Form to watch each digit grow into its value and build the addition sentence.
4. Use the dropdown to change the number size from 2 to 5 digits.

Teaching tips

• Watch for repeated digits like 535 — the two 5s are worth very different amounts. Ask students to explain why.
• Zeros are placeholders: in 507 the 0 still goes in the tens box, and the number has 0 tens.
• Extend the learning intention by asking for other ways to partition the same number, e.g. 535 = 4 hundreds + 13 tens + 5 ones.
