About this game
About a Foot? helps students build a mental picture of one foot so they can estimate lengths before they measure. Students look at everyday classroom objects and decide whether each one is less than a foot, about a foot, or more than a foot long.
Best for: Kindergarten to Year 2 (US customary units)
How to play
- Show students a real ruler or a 12-inch strip so they can see how long a foot is.
- Look at the object on screen and picture it next to the foot ruler.
- Drag or tap the object into Less than a foot, About a foot or More than a foot.
- Check the feedback and keep sorting to build your score.
Teaching tips
- Ask students to explain their choice: what do they compare the object to?
- Follow up by hunting for real objects in the classroom that are about a foot long.
